PBVD manufacturing process

Fluorine-doped FSI step index preforms and silica rods of LEONI Business Unit Fiber Optics are manufactured by the plasma-based deposition process (PBVD).
The manufacturing of a preform is a multi-step process, which first of all depends on the quality of the silica glass material and the competence to handle the process technology. j-fiber group as process and competence center for LEONI BU Fiber Optics can manufacture any required preform or draw the specialty fiber from it.

Preform manufacturing

Extremely pure synthetic fused silica rods are overcladded with fluorine doped silica layers to obtain a preform with step-index profile. A high-frequency plasma torch is used as a heating source for the chemical reaction of SiCl4, Oxygen and a fluorine containing gas. The high temperature plasma leads to chemical deposition conditions, which allow a high fluorine concentration in the cladding material.

Expertise in rod making

Pure synthetic fused silica is deposited in axial direction from a starting element. A high-frequency plasma torch is used as a heating source for the chemical reaction of SiCl4 and Oxygen. The high temperature plasma leads to chemical deposition conditions, which produce a low OH synthetic silica.
